No Valentine? No Worries

Even though it has become more romanticized over the years, some people feel Valentine's Day is a holiday commercially concocted means to sell more gifts, cards, candy, and flowers. It's not truly about love and relationships, but a silly holiday created by greeting card companies and businesses to make more money.

Since Valentine's Day is a day for couples to celebrate their love and affection, on this day for some who don't have anyone to share it with, can evoke feelings of loneliness, depression, and self-doubt. And it can't be any easier seeing all the romantic Valentine decors while walking pass a store, the candies, cards, teddy bears down the store aisles. But don't feel sorry for yourself, being single doesn't mean that you need to find Valentine's Day a depressing occasion. Just because it is aimed at lovers, doesn't mean you need to be in a romantic relationship to enjoy it.

Most people either live for Valentine's Day, or live to avoid it. There are many couples who resist Valentine's Day as much as possible, some even treat it like an average day. The day is said to be all about showing your love for someone, but if you truly love them, you should be showing it throughout the year, not just this day. And, just because a person is partnered up on V-day, doesn't mean all is perfect in their relationship. So don't go comparing yourself to other people.

You might be spending the day alone, but it isn't the end of the world. It's a great chance to celebrate the people you love, and even though our culture largely focuses on romantic love, there's no reason why people can't also celebrate the love between friends and family on this day. Instead of feeling down and unhappy, enjoy the day with friends who are flying solo just like you, watch a movie, enjoy a nice dinner, or just stay in and be alone.

And if you do have a romantic relationship, why not celebrate it? It's an excuse to be romantic!

To me Valentine's day is not a big deal. Love is not about a particular day, or about cards, flowers, or even being in a relationship. Love can come in many ways, and it comes 365 days a year, not just one day.
